Embrace, Encourage, Empower

Special Recognition!
July, 2009

The following note was received by our Senior Pastor, John Baxter, from Bishop Paul L. Leeland, regarding Gadsden Street Church being recognized by United Methodist Communications as an official "Welcoming Congregation.”
Dear John:
I wish to send my personal congratulations to you and Gadsden Street UMC for being recognized as a Welcoming Congregation! Practicing hospitality and providing your newcomers with a warm inviting place to grow and learn about Jesus is contagious, and I am very grateful for your emphasis in this vital area of ministry. I encourage you to participate in our four years of the certification program from United Methodist Communications as well.
With gratitude for your welcoming spirit, Bishop Paul L. Leeland

“Welcoming Congregations” are a select group of United Methodist congregations nationwide that meets criteria including embracing newcomers and providing opportunities in discipleship. The recognition program is part of a larger effort launched in late 2000 by United Methodist Communications, the denomination’s communications agency, to use modern technology and the common language of television to spread the Good News of Christ to a world in need.

“Open hearts, open minds, open doors” is the theme of the denominational effort, the centerpiece which is a series of national cable TV advertising, supplemented by regional and local church participants. The overall aim of the effort is to invite people, particularly those between 18 and 34 years old, to enter into connection with the Christian community as they seek meaning and purpose in their lives.

We are proud of Rev. John Baxter, Rev. Robin Noble, Janet Westlake and the evangelism team who work so hard to create an environment that welcomes all people into our worship services. Congratulations to Gadsden Street UMC on being named a “Welcoming Congregation”!
