The Pipe Organ of Gadsden Street United Methodist Church
The Gadsden Street UMC original organ was built by the Wicks Organ Company and dedicated in 1937 in memory of a Mrs. Perry, a previous organist. The chimes were dedicated in memory of Mrs. Thelma Nobles, another early organist of the church. Mrs. Minnie Leah (Nobles) Boschen was the organist until 1975. She and her husband, who was choir director, were very instrumental in establishing a vital music legacy in Pensacola, such as Pensacola Opera and the Choral Society. In 1975, Mrs. Ann Norris became the organist and still serves today.
The original Wick organ was only four ranks. It was re-built in 1986 by A.E.Schlueter Pipe Organ Company of Lithonia, GA and expanded to eight ranks with a 16’ flute extension, direct electric action in the windchest and solid-state relay and coupler system.
Hurricane Ivan in 2004 severely compromised and caused much water damage to the organ and most of its components. Mr. Schlueter came to the rescue and retrieved the organ and repaired/restored the instrument, console and operating system.
The console had to be relocated after repair of hurricane damage to the sanctuary and reconfiguration of the chancel area. It was placed on a movable platform. Because of space limitations and the size of the console, we had a problem situating it along with all the other furnishing is the area and is why it is in the present location.
With the sanctuary’s good acoustics, we feel that this organ offers the best sound musically and aesthetically for our congregation.
